Sickness absence and worklessness are estimated to have an economic cost to the UK economy of over £100 billion, with 30.7 million working days lost to work-related injuries or ill-health alone in 2017. In addition, 2017 Thriving at Work report, jointly commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Department of Health and Social Care (DoHSC) highlighted the growing number of employees are citing mental health issues as reasons for their sickness absence. The 2018 Health and Well-being at Work Survey, produced by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), found that 86% of respondents reported observing ‘presenteeism’ in their organisation over the last 12 months, whereby an employee works despite being unwell.

As a result, there is a significant impact on the productivity of the workforce, rendering negative consequences on organisations without the appropriate policies and initiatives in place to effectively manage health and wellbeing in the workplace.  The benefits of successful health and wellbeing workplace management are well documented, with the Thriving at Work report concluding that ‘being well is working well’.
