Dear Colleagues

Our conference this year will focus on a variety of topics including 'GDPR 3 months on' and sharing the "CQUIN' experience using case studies. The challenging area of personality disorders and work will be covered by Dr Adamou, a psychiatrist who works in the area of occupational health. 

At our last board meeting we discussed the progress of streamlining in the different regions. Whilst some regions have made good progress others are still in the early stages. Communication between areas that have had success is also patchy. So this year members who have made progress in streamlining will share their experiences with the network at the conference.

Remember to book your free place at the conference. It would be good to meet many of you again this year.

1. Network annual conference

We have nearly finalised the programme for this year’s conference and can confirm the following sessions:

  • Professor Diana Kloss – legal update including GDPR
  • Dr Marios Adamou – personality disorders and the implications for work in the NHS
  • Christina Butterworth – nurse leadership and the FOHN
  • An update on the Green book – what’s new and what’s changing
  • Case studies from Network members on streamlining, CQUINs, and managing stress and reducing absence

The conference will be on Wednesday 12th (AGM and conference dinner) and Thursday 13th September at the Chesford Grange Hotel in Warwickshire and you can now book your place by completing the attached booking form.

Network member organisations have one free place for their team but please remember to complete a booking form so that we know who is coming and can send them further details.

Members can purchase additional places at £295 for a full delegate place or £150 for a day place (for Thursday 13th only). Non-members can attend as day delegates at a cost of £295.

2. MoHaWK

Round 13 is fast approaching!

It is now the month of June and so it is important that you start to think about the indicators that you are going to take part in. Data collection (if you are collecting the data manually needs to start in June) and data entry will open in July. The briefing note is available here. MoHaWK Survey

MoHaWK subscribers will have received an invitation to take part in a dissertation survey titled “Is MoHaWK benchmarking valued by OH services in the UK?” The survey is distributed via the MoHaWK organisation and all responses are anonymous. The results of the survey will contribute towards a Masters dissertation as well as towards specialist MFOM qualification for Dr Chami Rathmalgoda, currently a specialist registrar.

This is the last month of the survey and participation is strongly encouraged. Please ensure only one response is given per organisation and that the full 4 pages of survey are completed before submission. If you have any further questions please contact Dr Rathmalgoda on chamishani.rathmalgoda@postgrad.manchester.ac.uk.

3. NHS Health and Wellbeing Framework

NHS England, together with NHS Improvement and NHS Employers, have developed a new NHS Workforce Health and Wellbeing Framework for all NHS organisations. 

Improving staff health and wellbeing provides benefits for individual staff, organisations and patients. Drawing on the evidence base and developed with 12 NHS organisations and expert input, the Framework and accompanying diagnostic tool  outlines what NHS organisations should do to improve staff health and wellbeing. The Framework also provides guidance on developing a staff health and wellbeing plan and evaluating this over time.

4. Dental Foundation Trainees

A statement on OH clearance for dental graduates entering foundation training was recently issued on behalf of Dr David Geddes, Director of Primary Care Commissioning. This states that in future OH clearance will only be accepted from SEQOHS accredited OH teams. A copy of the statement is available here.

5. SOM Webinar - OH - The Global Evidence & Value - 12 June 2018

What is the return on investment for occupational health (OH)?

Are you unsure as to the (cost-) effectiveness of OH interventions?

This webinar will highlight the literature, with related case studies, as to the research evidence and global rationale for investing in OH. The presentation will draw on the findings of a new SOM report on the global value of OH. A broad meaning to the word “value” will be applied, not limited to financial aspects only, but also include legal, moral, and other less tangible effects (such as effects on the corporate image). Finally, the webinar will conclude that there are benefits of investing in OH.  Click here to book.

6. Love your liver campaign

Love Your Liver is the British Liver Trust’s national campaign which aims raise awareness across the UK of the risk factors of liver disease and improve screening and early diagnosis.

Research shows that three quarters of people are currently diagnosed with liver disease in a hospital setting when they already have serious problems, and by this time for many it is too late. It is the only major cause of death still increasing year-on-year.  More than one in five of us are affected and the condition kills more people than breast cancer.

Displaying Love Your Liver materials, sharing information and/or holding an event are a great ways to raise awareness of liver health, and spread the message about how people can look after their liver.  

We can provide advice, support and materials to anyone looking to hold a Love Your Liver event.  Click on the relevant section below to find out specific information about the different types of event we can offer and how each event works:

7. Practitioner Health Programme – GP Health Service

The GP Health Service has recently appointed regional leads for advice and discussions on IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) and mental health support for GPs. Details of the appointments can be found here.

OH teams can signpost GPs to the service but it can only be accessed by self referral. Contact is via the generic email address gp.health@nhs.net, so that messages are dealt with in a timely manner. Messages can be passed on via this route or can be actioned if the issue has any sense of urgency. Any potential patients can also call direct on 0300 0303 300.

8. National School of OH – new lead appointed

Health Education England has announced that Dr Ali Hashtroudi has been appointed as the new Head of the National School of Occupational Health.

Dr Hashtroudi will be taking over from Professor John Harrison when he steps down from the role at the end of June, having worked with the school since its inception in 2014.

9. Health and Work Unit – challenge fund

In November 2017 the Work and Health Unit published Improving Lives, the Future of Work, Health and Disability. One of the proposals in the publication was to use part of the Work and Health Innovation Fund to create a “Challenge Fund” which enables external partners to apply for funding to develop and test approaches to build evidence in key areas.
They are in the process of appointing a delivery partner to help manage the fund. They will the expertise to make sure that the available grant funding is used to generate as much evidence as possible from genuinely innovative initiatives.  The delivery partner will run the process for applying for grant funding, including initial marketing and promotion, supporting applicants to understand the process, assessment of applications against agreed criteria for the fund, and supporting initiatives once they are approved. 
The delivery partner should be in place by late June/early July and the Challenge Fund should be advertised and open for grant applications from eligible organisations during the summer.  At that point more detail on the scope and the organisations who will be eligible to apply will be issued.

10. ADPH statements

ADPH (the Association of Directors of Public Health) has just published a series of statements examining good health across the life course, including a statement on living and working well.  All the statements are available to view here.

11. Guidance on tax incentives for workplace supported exercise schemes

The Government has issued guidance on using the tax system to offer gym memberships and sports facilities to staff. A copy is available here.

Occupational Health 2018

The annual SOM/FOM conference will take place at London’s Regent’s University from 25th–27th June. Full details of the programme, venue and recommended accommodation are available on the OH 2018 website or click here to register

International Practitioner Health Summit 2018 – The Wounded Healer

This 10 Year Anniversary Conference of the NHS Practitioner Health Programme will bring together the academic, clinical and experiential aspects of physician and practitioner health with a focus on mental health. It is aimed at doctors, nurses, pharmacists, allied health practitioners, dentists, counsellors and researchers in the field of practitioner health.

Delegates will have the opportunity to participate in drop in question time sessions, experiential learning and group work. A choice of multiple streams will cover topics such as: addiction, treatment models for mental health problems, promoting resilience, wounded medical students, and many others. 13. Flu fighter update

Final flu season figures announced

Public Health England have now released their full report on the uptake of the flu vaccination in frontline healthcare workers. The final uptake figures for 2017/18 is a record breaking 68.7 per cent making it the highest uptake ever, with over 80,000 more frontline healthcare workers taking up the jab. This is testament to all your dedication and hard work during the last flu season.

Flu fighter team shortlisted for UK Public Sector Communications Award

We are so excited to announce that the flu fighter team has been shortlisted for Community Relations Campaign of the Year at the UK Public Sector Communications Awards. The awards will be held in London on Wednesday 20 June. Keep your fingers crossed for us and we’ll keep you posted on the result!

NHS 70 ‘stand out stars’

You may have seen that NHS Employers have joined up with NHS Improvement and NHS England to find 70 of the NHS’s stand out stars as part of the NHS’s 70th birthday celebrations. One of our stand out stars is Jo Reynard who was named flu fighter champion at this year’s flu fighter awards.

The flu fighter team have nominated Jo for her exceptional dedication to the flu fighter campaign, locally and nationally. Voting is now open - please vote for Jo so she gets the recognition she deserves!


The NHS Health at Work Network brings together all OH teams providing health and wellbeing services to NHS OH staff.  It is dedicated to providing consistent, high quality health at work services to all NHS staff through collaborative working.
